Vík, located at the southernmost point in Iceland means bay in Norwegian and Swedish. The US journal Islands Magazine counted this beach as one of the ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. It’s majestic headlands, black sand beach, towering cliffs, and roaring surf attract photographers, birdwatchers, beach combers, and many tourists. The movie “Noah” with Russell Crowe was filmed there.
There are 291 inhabitants in the town of Vik and the community is in the eruption path of Mt. Katla, which erupts violently every 13–95 years. It has not erupted violently for 96 years, but if it does, it will cause serious floods from melting glacial ice. The only structure that is expected to be at a high enought elevation to survive is the red-roofed church in Vik and is where people are instructed to go at the first sign of eption. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds, including nesting puffins.
